Where Can I Find My Car's Title Number?

A car title is also called Pink Slip; it is a proof of legal ownership of a vehicle. Car titles are issued to the buyer at the time of purchase or at the time of making full payment if the car is financed. If you got a loan to buy the car, you will not get the car until you have fully paid off the title loan. If you wish to sell your car, you have to transfer ownership of the car to the buyer through the state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). To sell the car you must own the car outright, that is, there is no lien on the car.

Details on car titles include Vehicle Identification (VIN), manufacture date, model and make of the car, license plate number, name and address of the owner of the car.

How to Find the Title Number of a car

Step 1

Find your registration card. Your registration card should contain your title number and other information about your car. The title number has 8 digits and can be found on the line above your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

Step 2

Check your Registration renewal invitation, if you cannot find your registration card. The title number is usually located on the line that has the model and make of your car.

Step 3

If you are unable to find the title number through the steps highlighted above, another way to go about this is to apply for a duplicate title. You will have to apply for a duplicate title in the county where the car was originally recorded. To apply for a duplicate title, there is a fee to be paid, the fee varies for each state. You will need to provide your VIN number, and the date you bought the car to apply for a duplicate title.

Step 4

Take the application along with your driver’s license or other government-recognized ID to your DMV service center in your state. If you want to get the title same day, there might be additional processing fee. Send your application vis mail instead of going to queue at the service center if you are the busy type. Also include the processing fee in the mail, note that you may be charged additional fee for expedited service. The processing time for duplicate title varies with each state. Find out from you’re the relevant agencies in your state to know what is required and how long it will take to process the duplicate slip.
